Activities

The island of Murter and around

Active holidays

Walking & diving

If you like long walks through vivid landscape, Murter is the place for you. From any point on the coast, goat tracks let you circle the whole island and come back to where you started. And if you prefer viewpoints, most of the hills on the island can be reached on passable paths and gravel roads, with photographs to match at the top.

Whatever your experience, Murter and the Kornati are a paradise for sea kayakers. With so many islands, beaches, cliffs and caves, kayaking here never gets old. Sitting close to the Kornati national park, Murter makes an excellent starting point for your trips.

Day trips

Kornati & Krka

Take the chance to visit Kornati, the best known national park on the Adriatic. Cruising along the southern cliffs, which rise vertically as much as 90 metres above the sea, is a particular pleasure. The famous archipelago lies directly in front of Murter and few visitors come away unmoved: coves, small fishing settlements and clear water win people over at first sight. Lunch and swimming are included in the trip.

Another destination not to be missed, only 40 kilometres from Murter, is the Krka nature park. If you have not yet seen it, do not pass up the chance — it is proof of how remarkable nature can be, a tropical oasis set among sparse Mediterranean scrub.

Food

Restaurants & bars

Once you have recharged on one of the island’s beaches, it is time to try the traditional dishes of Murter, served in restaurants a few minutes’ walk from Villa Renata. Try polenta with cuttlefish, monkfish stew, or an octopus salad still made the local Dalmatian way.

After dinner, we suggest one of the local cafés or clubs. They will not offer you the mirror balls of the world’s great discotheques, but they will offer something you will not find anywhere else — the ease and atmosphere of Mediterranean life.

Beaches

Slanica & Podvrške

Murter is ringed with beaches tucked into picturesque coves along the whole of its coastline. Slanica, on the southern side of the island, is the main one, and among the loveliest and busiest sandy beaches on the Adriatic. Hundreds of metres of shallow water make it ideal for small children, as does the water park. At the same time the beach bars draw a younger crowd, and in the evening there are concerts, parties and the obligatory night swim.

The prettiest beach on the island, Podvrške, is a five-minute walk from Villa Renata. Its white sand turns the clear water azure, and it offers excellent ground for diving and fishing.
